about the project.

This project was twofold, working with Kames Capital in conjunction with Gaunt Francis Architects.

Powell was awarded the contract for the CAT A refurbishment works for Kames Capital, to include strip out of old nightclub, bar and offices. Having worked on previous projects together, Powell was then awarded the contract for the relocation service and CAT B fit out works for the tenant, Gaunt Francis Architects.

Gaunt Francis Architects is a creative commercial design studio, with offices in London and Cardiff, that has delivered award-winning projects throughout the UK and abroad. Capital Tower in the City Centre had been the client’s home for many years in Cardiff, but over the last few years, the team had expanded and had therefore outgrown their existing office.

Gaunt Francis Architects moved into the five-storey, warehouse building on one of the oldest, most iconic and creative streets in Cardiff.

the brief.

The building on Womanby Street was in a very poor state of repair, but the potential was huge. The building had a strong architectural style and character and Kames Capital wanted to highlight these features within the interior. The client also wanted the space to include as much natural light as possible.

Gaunt Francis Architects wanted high quality interior with a less corporate feel. They wanted a place that was as comfortable to work in as your own home, and where it was easy for teams to collaborate.

the works.

For the CAT A works, Powell completed all elements of the strip out across the five floors, including building repairs and internal reconfigurations. Powell completed all mechanical and electrical works to the existing bar area, cellular office space and cellar, as well as full window replacements, flooring and decoration.

Powell moved staff storage and existing furniture over from Capital Tower to Womanby Street. Works also included a brand-new fitted kitchen, tea point and all furniture, fixtures and equipment. Gaunt Francis Architects also wanted to create a chill-out space for staff to unwind and connect.

The result of the works at 23 Womanby Street is now a true reflection of a modern, creative working space.

“Throughout the relocation, Powell had good communication skills and were competitive on price. The fit out team were also willing and flexible, particularly in terms of working hours and conditions. Thankfully, Powell understood our aims for the space and the finished results are perfect – our new look office has been well received and our team are enjoying using the space.”

Alan Francis, Managing Director, Gaunt Francis Architects
